Wireless Speed Index
Notable Points. June 2018
For June 2018 the trend of both T-Mobile and Verizon being the run away or top networks for speed continues. The 2 networks took the top spot for performance in 33 of 40 cities tracked. With both networks being right at or above 30 Mbps average download speed across the nation, looking at our long term chart shows a healthy gap between the top 2 and bottom 2 performing networks. We expect this trend to continue for the time being and for speed to keep rising.

Overall everyone is setting a benefit generally on all 4 networks because we have seen the percent of time when a network is above 10 Mbps greatly increase over the past year and continue to increase with all 4 networks being solidly above 50% of the time and 3 of 4 greater than 60% of the time. This trend should continue as well.

What's it about?
That's what this "State of LTE in the US" index answers monthly. All data for this index is crowd sourced and gathered through the SpeedSmart Speed Test app for iOS and Android. Every month users take millions of speed tests using our app, this gives us an edge because our data is provided only by users not by ISP's or companies driving around in a van. That means we get real data from real people using their device in normal ways and at locations like your home or office, places you actually use data. The index is updated monthly so be sure to check back and see who's the fastest.

To help understand how we come to our conclustions we offer a small raw data sample avaiable for you to download here. This small sample of test data from Orlando, Florida taken between 06/1/2018 - 06/30/2018.
What is this 200 point scale thing?
It's a simple system we use to award a winner each month. A network is given 10 points for each section (Fastest Download, Fastest Upload, or Lowest Latency) they win, 5 points for each region won for download or upload speed, 3 points per city where the network has the fastest LTE download will be given. There is 200 total points available, the network with the most points is the fastest for the current month.
